Leadership Under Real Conditions

A new book by Laura K. Spencer, Ed.D. … Coming Winter 2026.

You got the role by being the best in the room.

You’re still the calm one in every meeting. The one who sees the holes in the plan. The one everyone counts on to hold it together.

And some days, quietly, you wonder if you climbed the wrong mountain.

This book is for you.

About the book

The building changes. The terrain doesn’t.

Most leadership advice tells you to project confidence, control the narrative, and never let them see you sweat. That advice is why so many capable leaders are exhausted, isolated, and secretly unsure they even like the job anymore.

Read the Terrain makes a different argument: leadership fails when we optimize for looking good instead of reading what’s real. The fix isn’t more polish. It’s a skill. Reading the room. Reading the person in front of you. Reading the decision, the pace, and your own limits. Then acting on what’s actually there instead of performing what’s expected.

The lessons come from an unexpected classroom: the driver’s seat of a Land Rover on trails where force fails and reading wins. Where the obstacle doesn’t care about your title, your plan, or how confident you look approaching it. Where the only thing that gets you through is seeing what’s really in front of you.

Force fails. Reading wins.

Advance praise

Read by leaders who work the real terrain.

Laura Spencer understands that leadership does not happen on paved roads. It happens when the map stops matching reality, the pressure rises, and leaders must honestly assess what they know, what they are still figuring out, and what the moment requires. Her insight into the danger of “performed certainty” is sharp, practical, and deeply relevant. She shows that honesty about uncertainty is not a failure of leadership, but one of its most trustworthy forms.

Laura is a genuine divergent thinker. She sees possibilities others miss, puts her perspective into practice, and leads with rare originality and courage. She does more than inspire new thinking, she models a way forward. Read the Terrain is wise, innovative, and immediately useful for anyone leading under real conditions.

Read the Terrain is for leaders operating in environments where conditions are always changing, the pressure is real, and the usual answers no longer fit. Laura Spencer shows that strong leadership is not about projecting certainty… it is about reading what is actually happening, recognizing patterns early, and adjusting before the situation gets away from you. Honest, practical, and built for the real world, this is a must-read for leaders who want to turn awareness into better decisions and better performance.

Laura Spencer connects two seemingly disparate endeavors, off road driving leadership and educational leadership, effectively and compellingly in this book. Experienced off road trail leaders learn quickly to anticipate shifting conditions and make necessary adaptations; just because you made it through or over an obstacle does not mean the conditions will be the same for the next vehicle in the convoy. I’ve served in both capacities, and leaders in any field will benefit from reading their terrain.

I smiled when Laura took the right line anyway because I have done my own version of that more times than I would like to admit. Read the Terrain feels like a friend sitting beside you in that awful leadership moment when everyone is looking at you and you are quietly hoping you made the right call.
